Therapy Approaches

I like to use a flexible approach, guided by you, and I use a range of therapy styles and techniques to suit your needs and preferences. This includes:

  • EMDR therapy is designed for working with distressing or traumatic memories. these memories can be blocked or “stuck” and lead to long term distress and emotional pain. EMDR therapy uses eye movements or other sensory activities to “unblock” the memory and help process and heal the emotional pain.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses on how thoughts and actions influence how you feel. CBT uses practical strategies to help people change unhealthy ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

  • ACT is a form of therapy that focuses on the idea that our thoughts and feelings are temporary., and teaches us to endure tough experiences without being overwhelmed. By not clinging to our thoughts and emotions, we can make better choices for a fulfilling life. ACT provides tools to manage negative thoughts and accept life's challenges. ACT helps you deal with negative thoughts and feelings by accepting them rather than trying to control them. When you learn to accept and distance yourself from these thoughts and emotions, they lose their power, allowing for healthier responses.

  • Mindfulness is a practice that involves techniques like meditation and deep breathing, to focus on the present and be less caught up in your thoughts and emotions. It helps to reduce stress, enhances well-being, and can help with a variety of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.

  • Schema therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps people understand how their belief systems, or schemas, shape their perception of themselves and the world. The therapy is based on the idea that people form schemas in childhood, especially around their family and immediate environment. The goal of schema therapy is to help people identify and change any unhealthy harmful schemas to improve their lives

  • IPT is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on improving interpersonal issues to relieve mental health difficulties. IPT aims to help clients improve the quality of their relationships, Improve social functioning, better manage difficult life transitions, navigate difficult interpersonal relationships, and build up their social supports

  • Motivational interviewing is a counseling technique that helps people work through and resolve ambivalent or unsure feelings, to find the internal motivation and confidence to make positive changes in their life.
